  90. WHAT IT DOES
  91.  
  92.     First, you can run your Workbench on a Domino-screen.  I do it in
  93. 800x600, and it looks nice; even the mouse pointer is in high resolution.
  94. The drawback here is the scrolling speed of text windows, but I'll explain
  95. this later.
  96.  
  97.     If you want to view nice pictures, there's a little program (ViewDom)
  98. included which will display all normal IFF pictures except 32-color images
  99. (strangely enough).  I never tried extra-half-bright pictures, but HAM
  100. pictures are displayed quite well. The most interesting feature is of course
  101. ViewDom's ability to display IFF24 images. The pictures are displayed in as
  102. 15-bit images (32,768 colors) on a Domino screen.  Unfortunately, they are
  103. not dithered.  In particular, raytraced pictures sometimes look a bit ugly in
  104. undithered 15-bit mode.  My hope is the AdPro driver mentioned later.

  106.     The most interesting feature of Domino is its ability to run
  107. (almost) any program on a Domino screen.  Each time a program wants to open a
  108. custom screen with up to 16 colors, a requester pops up. It asks if you want
  109. to run the program on the Domino screen or not.  A nice feature here is that
  110. you can store the settings for the screen name.  For example, each time the
  111. Imagine screen opens, it will run automatically (without requester) on the
  112. Domino.  The problem is that some programs open screens without names, so
  113. the setting cannot be stored.

  115.     "Well, now I have a large screen, but will the program recognize and
  116. use it?"  Hm, that's a good point:  most programs run on the Domino, but
  117. they will not use the higher resolution.  BUT there are some exceptions:
  118. IMAGINE (yeah!!!), CygnusEd, PageStream, ProCalc, and others.

  121. WHICH PROGRAMS RUN?
  122.  
  123.     I tried quite a lot and here are the results:
  124.  
  125.     Programs that run on Domino screens but don't use the higher
  126. resolution:  3D-Pro, ImageLink, IntroCAD, Pixel3D 1.0, Real3D, Reflections,
  127. Videoscape 3D, BeckerText I, Calligrapher, Datamat. 
  128.  
  129.     Programs that run on Domino screens AND use higher resolution:
  130. Imagine, MaxonCAD, BeckerText II (uses only larger height), FontDesigner,
  131. ProfCalc, MaxiPlan 1.8 (uses only larger height), SuperBasePro IV, LSE,
  132. DevPac 3.01, SuperJAM, Cinemorph (I saw it in Cologne), and CygnusEd.

  134.     Programs that don't run on Domino screens:  AudioMaster III,
  135. Audition IV, AMax II+, ImageMaster, ADPro (the main window does not run on a
  136. Domino screen, but the Visual-operators do, and they use the higher
  137. resolution.)

  140. HOW ABOUT IMAGINE?
  141.  
  142.     Okay, now it's getting interesting:  All Imagine editors use the
  143. higher resolution :-))))))
  144.  
  145.     The Project and Action editors only use the higher number of lines,
  146. but not the higher number of columns.
  147.  
  148.     The other ones use the complete screen.  I run Imagine 2.0 on a
  149. 800x600 screen in 60 Hz.  (If I'd have a larger monitor I could run it on a
  150. 1024x768 screen).
  151.  
  152. Well, there some disadvantages, too: 
  153.  
  154. The speed.  Line drawing is quite a lot slower than before :-(
  155.  
  156. The mouse.  The "hot spot" of the mouse pointer is not in the middle of it,
  157.   but in the upper left corner. You have to click about 0.5cm below and
  158.   0.5cm right of your target.  (Very strange, but I'm almost used to it.)
  159.  
  160. The redraw.  Sometimes the redraw is a bit confused, but it's only a minor
  161.   problem, because pressing ALT-R can fix it.
  162.  
  163. The images.  At the moment I can't view my rendered 24-bit images directly
  164.   in Imagine.  There is a driver announced, but I don't have it yet.  ILBM24
  165.   pictures created by Imagine CAN'T be loaded directly to ViewDom.  You can
  166.   load them with ADPro and save them again as ILBM24 and it works.  The
  167.   ILBM24 picture saved with ADPro is some kilobytes larger than the one
  168.   stored with Imagine.  (Strange, strange.)

  171. SOFTWARE DRIVERS
  172.  
  173.     There are some drivers announced:  Imagine, ADPro, ImageMaster,
  174. Real3D, and VistaPro.  With the drivers you can display directly on the
  175. Domino screen.

  178. FUTURE
  179.  
  180. There are two updates planned:
  181. - An update for 24-bit ability (approximately 200 DM).
  182. - An update for 24-bit ability AND an own blitter -> FAAAST ("Far under 1000
  183.   DM", I was told.)

  186. THE DRAWBACK
  187.  
  188.     One drawback is the scrolling speed in shell windows.  If you want to
  189. have a shell window as large as your whole screen, the scrolling is dog slow.
  190. Normally I open shell windows with about 300x100 pixels and it is OK.
  191.  
  192.     The scrolling speed depends on your processor speed. I use a
  193. Commodore A2630 [68030] board.

  196. AN ADVANTAGE
  197.  
  198.     Domino screens don't need CHIP memory.
  199.

  201. COMPETITORS
  202.  
  203.     On the CSS (Computer Shopper Show) in Cologne, where I purchased the
  204. board, there were some other interesting graphic boards:
  205.  
  206. - EGC from GVP.
  207.   24 bit.
  208.   Fast.
  209.   Very fast.
  210.   Extremely fast.
  211.   2700$.
  212.   
  213.   The demo at the GVP booth was very impressive.  In the background there was
  214.   a "little" 24-bit image ("Terminator II" in 1024 x 768) on the screen.  In
  215.   the foreground there were four smaller windows (each about 200x200), each
  216.   with a 24-bit animation in it.  And everything in 30 frames per second!!!
  217.   It was amazing.  Of course, the Workbench and many more programs can run on
  218.   the EGS screen.

  220. - Retina from MacroSystems.
  221.   This sounds nice.  It has almost the same colors and resolutions as Domino,
  222.   but it also has a 24-bit mode (it's in 640x480 I think).  It also has it's
  223.   own processor. Retina costs between approximately 550-800 DM (depending on
  224.   the amount of video RAM).
  225.   
  226. - OmniBus from ArMax.
  227.   The same resolutions and colors like the Domino, but it's a bit cheaper and
  228.   scrolling seemed a bit faster.  I don't know.
  229.  
  230.     That's all for today.  I'll mail again when I receive my ordered
  231. drivers for ADPro, ImageMaster and (of course) Imagine.
